Writing Workshops

Starting in 2022, the Dedman Distinguished Scholars Essay Competition began holding writing workshops to assist students in working on their essays. Any student that is interested in applying to the competition is encouraged to attend both of the workshops in order to ensure that their essay is of the highest quality before submission. Students are not required to attend these workshops in order to apply to the competition, but they will be useful resources to help develop college-level writing skills. Both workshops will be held online over Zoom, and students must register beforehand to receive the Zoom link and attend.

Workshop 1

The first writing workshop will be held on April 12th at 7:00 pm. This workshop will include a presentation that goes over the following:

  • Overview of the essay prompt
  • Brainstorming and revising strategies
  • Tips for writing an introduction and conclusion
  • Q&A with a representative from the DDSP

Workshop 2

Part 2 of the writing workshops will be held from April 13th to April 28th. Over the course of two weeks, students will be able to sign up for one on one writing consultations with an experienced writing consultant from UT Austin. Students do not need to have a finalized draft of their essay to attend. Students can only register for one 30-minute time slot. The student can discuss any concerns that they may have about their essay with the consultant, which can include:

  • Structure and organization
  • Adherence to the prompt
  • Content
  • Grammar

You can sign up for a one on one writing consultation using this Calendly link. In order to allow other students to have the opportunity to attend a consultation, you may only sign up for one consultation.

Due to the limited number of consultation time slots, please commit to attending your consultation once you have signed up. If you are unable to attend your consultation, please cancel or reschedule your consultation 24 hours in advance so other students have the chance to register.

Prior to the event, please make sure that you have a way to share your paper with the consultant. Be prepared for screen sharing through Zoom or open link-sharing permission on Google Docs.
