Starting in 2022, the Dedman Distinguished Scholars Essay Competition will be partnering up with UT’s University Writing Center to hold two writing workshops in April. Any student that is interested in applying to the competition is encouraged to attend both of the workshops in order to ensure that their essay is of the highest quality before submission. Students are not required to attend these workshops in order to apply to the competition, but they will be useful resources to help develop college-level writing skills. Both workshops will be held online over Zoom, and students must register beforehand to receive the Zoom link and attend.
Workshop 1
The first writing workshop will be held on April 13th at 4:00 pm. This workshop will include a presentation from University Writing Consultants that go over the following:
- Overview of the essay prompt
- Brainstorming and revising strategies
- Tips for writing an introduction and conclusion
- Q&A with representatives from the DDSP and the UWC
In order to attend Workshop 1, please register here. You will receive the Zoom link for the workshop on the morning of April 13th.
***A make up meeting for those that were late or unable to attend Workshop 1 will now be held on April 20th at 5:00 pm. Please register for the make up meeting here.
Workshop 2
The second writing workshop will be held on April 28th from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. This workshop will involve drop-in writing consultations with experienced writing consultants from the UWC. Students do not need to have a finalized draft of their essay to attend. Students register for only one 30-minute time slot between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm, and they will be paired with a writing consultant for a 30-minute consultation. The student can discuss any concerns that they may have about their essay with the consultant, which can include:
- Structure and organization
- Adherence to the prompt
- Content
- Grammar
In order to register for Workshop 2, please sign up here.
The registration form for Workshop 2 will close on April 21st or when all of the slots for the workshop have been filled up. Due to the limited number of available writing consultants, the number of attendees will be capped at 30.
***Prior to the event, please make sure that you have a way to share your paper with the consultant. Enable screen sharing through Zoom or open link sharing permission on Google Docs.
